Abstract

"Focus on York County" piece on Sanford's New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) franchise--the Mainers--a team that got off to a rough start, but is now drawing crowds. Eighty local businesses have become sponsors; and an initial negative reaction from the community to the founders, who were believed to be simply after profits, has changed. Last year, the Mainers reorganized as a nonprofit organization, and the team had a positive cash flow. With details on new funders for the team, its changing board of directors, the NECBL, marketing efforts, support of local businesses, the Mainers' championship summer 2004 season, and the history of Sanford's Goodall Park.
