Abstract

"Focus on York County" piece on the Southern Maine Coast Tourism Association (SMCTA), which recently hired Will Haynes, 24, to be its first program coordinator, charging him with developing a simple message to market the diverse region. The change is part of an effort by the Maine Office of Tourism to encourage regional tourism marketing, a concept new to Maine. In 2001, the state approved the creation of the Maine Tourism Marketing Partnership Program, which funds the state's eight tourism regions more predictably than had been the case, allowing for longer-term projects. Gov. John Baldacci was instrumental in creating CenTRO, the Center for Tourism Research and Outreach, a joint effort involving state agencies, the state university system, and the tourism industry. With a profile of Haynes.
