Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on transportation funding, noting that preliminary state budget figures paint a bleak picture. Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) officials predict that state-maintained roads and highways will see up to a 20 percent decrease in miles paved and as much as a 40 percent decrease in miles improved compared to the previous biennium. Officials point toward lower anticipated federal funds, material cost increases and a stingy transportation bond. With additional comments on efforts to repeal the indexing provision that increases Maine's motor fuel tax according to the rate of inflation.
