Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the Legislature's Appropriations Committee, which recently held hearings on the proposed state budget. Jack Cashman, commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), said his department is being asked to make cuts, and noted that it is losing millions in federal community development block grants as well. DECD is the state's smallest commissioner-led agency, with just 45 employees. The hearings also addressed financial factors relevant to several specific industries, including broadcasting, restaurants and Bath Iron Works.
