Abstract

"Building & real estate" special section piece on SMRT Inc., an architecture, engineering, and planning firm on Portland's waterfront that is involved in three waterfront projects. SMRT was founded 120 years ago by John Calvin Stevens, whose great grandson, Paul Stevens, still serves as chairman. The company grew and changed rapidly in the1990s, continuing to add design, engineering, and planning staff, and positioning itself to do large projects. Its specialities are education, corporate/government, health care, industrial/advanced tech, and justice/correction buildings. It is the largest architecture and design firm in Maine and northern New England and is extending its reach southward as it tries to stay competitive in a slow market.
