Abstract

Walter McIntire of the University of Maine College of Education says that, over the next decade, Maine's schools will face the sharpest enrollment decline in the northeast. Maine's net enrollment is expected to fall from 218,000 in 1993 to 213,000 in 2006; however, over a third of the state's teachers can also be expected to retire within the decade.
