Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a new law designed to complement existing measures dealing with identity theft and credit card fraud. The new law aims to stop "skimming," which occurs when a waiter or clerk uses a handheld device to copy the account information from your credit or debit card. The law creates a separate crime of using a skimming device, which can reslut in a year in jail and a $2,000 fine for each offense. Another measure that is now law bans the practice of insurance companies requiring policyholders to use repair shops that it has approved.
