Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece with a profile of Paula Stotts, proprietor of Whispering Winds Farm in Mechanic Falls. Stotts, a lifelong farmer, said her flock of organic, free-range turkeys dwindled from 170 to 27 turkeys this year, due to heavy rains in the spring and in October. The weather and other factors have also wreaked havoc on the farm's vegetable and chicken production, and Stotts expects to the farm to lose $10,000 - $15,000 this year. She plans to add a maple sugaring operation next year, noting that for a small farm to survive, it's necessary to diversify as much as possible.
