Abstract

"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece on the Small Business Administration's (SBA) microloan program, which offers loans of up to $35,000 aimed at small businesses that might be ineligible for traditional bank loans. Six Maine nonprofit lenders participate in the program, issuing 62 microloans in the past year. With comments by Jane Mickeriz, a loan officer for the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments; Ellen Golden, senior vice president for development at Coastal Enterprises, Inc.; and Chesley Flotten, who used an SBA microloan to open the Knitting Experience Cafe in Brunswick.
