Abstract

"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece with comments by Maine bankers on the tight interest rate environment of 2005, and a look ahead to 2006. Dan Hunter, CFO of Gorham Savings Bank, says higher short-term interest rates and increased competition make it more difficult for banks to protect their net interest margin. Hunter said that because of the flat yield curve, it is especially difficult to predict interest rates in the coming year. With additional analyses by Peter St. John, senior vice president, commercial services, at Katahdin Trust Company; Greg Dufour, president and COO at Camden National Bank; and Rob Johnson & Jim Delamater, CFO and CEO at Northeast Bank in Lewiston.
