Abstract

"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece on UMaine's Student Portfolio Investment Fund (SPIFFY), a student-run organization in charge of investing more than $1 million of the University of Maine's $113 million endowment. SPIFFY members, under the direction of faculty advisor Bob Strong, will attend the annual Global Student Investment Strategy and Portfolio symposium in Dayton, Ohio at the end of March. The SPIFFY portfolio posted an annualized average return of 10.5 percent during the twelve years through 2005, compared to an 8.5 percent return for the S&P 500. For Scott Reynolds and William Sulinski, the UMaine seniors serving as SPIFFY co-presidents, the opportunity to invest real funds is an invaluable learning experience.
