Abstract

"Focus on Western Maine" piece on lawyer Seth Carey of Rumford, who is launching a citizens' initiative to open a resort casino in Western Maine, arousing controversy and criticism. Carey left Maine to attend Clemson University in South Carolina, but returned in 2002 to become the regional campaign director for Oxford and Androscoggin counties for gubernatorial candidate and current governor John Baldacci. He unveiled his casino plan in May on the website of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises LLC. He says he hopes to bring new jobs to the declining region.
