Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on the effect of Maine's 1997 Electric Industry Restructuring Act on business, by Sara J. Burns, president and CEO of Central Maine Power Co. Central Maine Power and other utilities continued as regulated deliverers of power after the act passed, but unregulated companies took over ownership of the supply, prices for which have risen nearly 70 percent since 2004. Several other states that deregulated electricity have taken back control of supply pricing or are looking for ways to do so. Burns believes Maine should do the same.
