Abstract

"Business Maine: Southern" piece on the recent lawsuit against the former owners of the Big Easy nightclub in Portland, after a visitor allegedly heard a band playing two cover-band standards. Broadcast Music International (BMI), one of two companies that control virtually all of the nation's published music, filed suit in federal court. The club apparently failed to pay an annual $1,800 license fee, and now faces up to $360,000 in fines. BMI said the suit was filed after club owners James and William O'Brien failed to respond to more than 100 phone calls and 44 letters to them and their lawyer.
