Abstract

"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece on Bangor Savings Bank's expansion goals. Already the largest Maine-owned bank, Bangor Savings Bank has 43 branches across the state, with core markets in Bangor and rural northern, western and eastern Maine. James Conlon, president and CEO, says the bank plans new branches in Portland, Scarborough and South Portland in an effort to establish a truly statewide presence. Bangor Savings Bank is restructuring itself to become a mutual holding company named Bangor Bancorp that will better position the bank for acquisitions. Yellow Light Breen, senior vice president of the bank, says previous consolidation among Maine's community banks means there are fewer acquisition opportunities. With comments by Chris Pinkham, executive director of the Maine Association of Community Banks.
