Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece on the Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health, the biomedical research lab that Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS) has been planning since 2004. The $14 million building in Brewer isn't expected to be complete until 2009, but the institute is moving forward with its ambitious cancer research projects. Janet Hock, executive director, said she hopes collaboration between EMHS, the Jackson Lab and the University of Maine will create a biotech hub in Brewer. The lab has received $3.8 million in federal appropriations, but will need at least $40 million more in funds over the next 10 years.
