Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece on George Smith, president of the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) in Portland, a new program which expects to welcome its inaugural class of roughly 15 doctoral students this May. Smith expects the three-year program, once enrollment is filled, to bring in $1 million in tuition, which will fund the school's operations. Most of the tutelage between students and faculty will be streamed through on online program. Smith, who helped set up the Master of Fine Arts program at Maine College of Art, believes Portland's emergence as a nationally recognized arts center will soon be seen as a model for other cities.
