Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece reporting that rising electricity rates, especially in Aroostook County, have prompted the Legislature to consider rolling back parts of the state's deregulation system. Maine electricity rates have increased 16 percent since 2000, when deregulation rules went into effect. Supporters of the override effort point out that deregulation failed to attract competing power suppliers, as it intended. But supporters of deregulation, including Maine's public advocate, say the law has helped bring Maine electricity rates closer to the national average.
