Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a recent Forbes magazine ranking putting Maine among the worst states for business. Governor John Baldacci doesn't believe the ranking accurately reflects the state, saying that some of the data sources are subjective and have biases that make Maine look worse than it really is. But another study, from State Policy Reports using federal data, also suggests a sluggish local economy. Bill Becker, president of the Maine Heritage Policy Center, and Dana Connors, president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, say the ranking should concern all policymakers.
