Abstract

Many nonprofits in Maine are experiencing the challenge of a change in leadership, but the examples of three recent transitions demonstrate how exiting leaders and boards of directors can make the process go more smoothly. The successful turnovers include Karin Anderson's departure as executive director of the Maine Women's Fund in Portland; the Maine Humanities Council's process to replace long-time executive director Dorothy Schwartz; and the rallying of Safe Passage after its visionary founder Hanley Denning was killed in a car accident in Guatemala.
