Abstract

"Focus on Building & Real Estate" commentary piece by Roxane A. Cole, president of the Portland-based Maine Real Estate & Development Association (MEREDA), which works to defeat anti-development bills. MERIDA helped defeat a bill to ban formula businesses in Portland's downtown area, but was unsuccessful in defeating the so-called Informed Growth Act, which would require a comprehensive impact study of any retail project 75,000 square feet or larger. Shortly after passage of the act, it was featured in a "Wall Street Journal" story.
