Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Gov. John Baldacci's rejection of a request for supplemental funding by Maine Supreme Court Judicial Chief Justice Leigh Saufley. Saufley said crime is up, and about half of all criminal cases are indigent defendants. There are also a rising number of cases involving claims of mental illness, which increase costs to the courts. She said she might be forced to reduce days of operation in some courts or close some courts entirely.
