Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece reporting that nearly half of the CareerCenters operated by the Maine Department of Labor (DOL) might be closed to help balance the budget. Laura Fortman, labor commissioner, said it will take $4 million to keep the system going as it is today, noting that most of the budget comes from federal grants which have been decreasing. DOL would close 10 of its 21 CareerCenters under the proposal. Members of the Labor Committee and several members of the Appropriations Committee oppose the plan.
