Abstract

"Focus on York County" piece on how the rejection of a proposed casino in Sanford five years ago helped catalyze a pro-business movement. Les Stevens was hired as the town's first economic development director, and Sanford pulled out the stops to avoid losing rug manufacturer Flemish Master Weavers. Sanford's population is projected to become Maine's fourth largest in 10 years. The town has aggressively drawn big box stores and is methodically working to expand its economy.
