Abstract

"Focus on Greater Portland" piece on Greater Portland's effort to gain Pine Tree Development Zone status, which is designed to help areas with low wages and high unemployment.. The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Anne Haskell (D-Portland), says "Maine is to the U.S. what Washington County is to Maine," heading off arguments that the PTZ program is only for rural areas of the state. The program has been expanding since its inception, and supporters say the incentive is needed to bring biotech and other businesses to Maine.
