Abstract

When Bowdoinham lost one of the few businesses in its village, town leaders began to creatively promote local entrepreneurs, artists, farmers, and others, whether or not they had a storefront. "Buy Local" campaigns are springing up around Maine, in many cases prompted by the economic downturn. Research has shown that effective campaigns need to be sustained over time in order to shift consumer habits. With details on energetic buy-local campaigns in Portland, South Portland, and Saco-Biddeford.
