Abstract

While other cities in Maine have had difficulty finding ways to get approval and funding for arenas and convention centers, Bangor residents recently approved a $65 million arena and convention center that will be funded through racino revenues, saved revenues, and with money received from Bangor's downtown tax increment financing district. Portland and Lewiston's plans for convention centers and complexes have not been as well received by their communities due to funding issues. Other convention center and arena proposals in Maine will have to address the issue of funding without relying completely on taxpayers' money.
