Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a bill co-sponsored by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree to address the "widow's tax". Current federal policy states that a military spouse whose husband or wife dies due to a service-related cause cannot receive both survivor's benefits and the full insurance benefits purchased from the Department of Defense at retirement. The annuity benefit is reduced by the amount of the monthly survivor benefit. Maine is home to over 138,000 veterans. This bill is also supported by Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and has bipartisan support.
