Abstract

"Trends." Tourism is Maine's second-largest industry, producing over $3 billion in revenue. Despite some ambivalence by state residents, Maine competes heavily with states like Massachusetts, New York and Virginia to attract tourists and their money. The typical visitor is a 50-year-old married person with a college degree and an income of just under $70,000. Sightseeing and shopping are more popular than water activities, and the most popular destination is Bar Harbor.
