Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on continued cost overruns at the Department of Health and Human Services that have reached $70.9 million for the current budget year. MaineCare expenses are responsible for the majority of the deficit and some of the costs may continue into the next budget year. Ongoing federal audits of Medicare-funded projects that could result in additional expenditures and under-budgeted items may add additional complications. The appropriations committee will likely discuss an emergency budget proposal to address the situation beginning in December.
