Abstract

"Focus Greater Portland" piece on the increased development of affordable and market-rate housing in Portland. In 2012, developers are on track to start building more than 600 market-rate units in different areas of the city. These new units will help attract young professionals to Portland, where the limited housing opportunities are often expensive. The Low Income Housing Tax Credit program offered by the Maine State Housing Authority has helped stimulate affordable housing construction during a time when market-rate condo developers have struggled. The City of Portland is considering a policy that would promote more housing developments that include a mixture of both affordable and market-rate units.
