Abstract

"Focus Midcoast Region" piece on the impact of a fatal pathogen, called MSX, on Maine oysters, which are in high demand and considered by some to be the best oysters in North America. In what was a $1.8 million industry in 2010, some oyster harvesters in the Damariscotta River area are reporting losses as high as 80% or more in 2011. Many oyster growers have switched to disease-resistant strains but it takes a couple of years for the oysters to mature enough to be harvested. With sidebar on Marshall Wharf Brewing Company's usage of Maine oysters in its Pemaquid Oyster Stout and graph of farm-raised American oyster harvests in Maine between 2005 and 2010.
