Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Governor Paul LePage's presentation at the Bush Institute Conference on Taxes and Economic Growth where he proposed to reduce the state's personal income tax to a flat 4% and to lower the top corporate tax rate to 4%. Rep. Seth Berry, the lead Democrat on the Taxation Committee said that LePage's proposals would give breaks to the wealthy and corporations and shift the burden to the middle class in the form of higher property taxes. While disagreeing with Berry's reaction to lowered personal taxes, the Republican co-chair of the Taxation Committee, Rep. Gary Knight, agreed that the corporate tax reduction would most likely benefit large out-of-state corporations.
