Abstract

"Focus Energy" piece on Electricity Maine, the Auburn-based business owned by Kevin Dean and Emile Clavet. The 14-month old company provides electricity to over 150,000 customers at a cost that is about 5% lower than CMP's and 1.5% lower than Bangor Hydro's. Various factors have contributed to the company's initial success, including a different purchasing cycle, a focus on the small customer, and infrastructure such as the billing software that Dean and Clavet had developed for a previous joint venture which has enabled them to handle thousands of transactions.
