Abstract

Maine’s dairy industry has been impacted by a range of factors, including increased operational costs, competition from out-of-state dairies, changes in the grocery business, and the closure of the Garelick Farms plant in Bangor. Oakhurst Dairy’s “Keep Your Milk in Maine” ad campaign, which is using social media as well as print ads, is an attempt to encourage Mainers to purchase milk produced by Maine dairy farmers. The campaign is taking a subtle approach, focusing on Maine farmers and producers, rather than specifically on its own Oakhurst brand. Maine has four dairy processors remaining: Oakhurst, H.P. Hood, Smiling Hill Farm, and Houlton Farms. With sidebar outlining several bills designed to help the dairy industry.
