Abstract
“Focus Northern Maine” piece on Maine Heritage Timber Co. of Millinocket. The company, under the leadership of Tom Shafer and Steve Sanders, recovers logs from the bottom of Quakish Lake and turns them into high-end flooring. The men initially thought they would sell the salvaged wood for pulp to be used in paper-making, but when the East Millinocket pulp mill closed in 2011, they shifted gears dramatically, learning to process the wood for flooring and custom furniture. The company’s branding and marketing efforts pay homage to the state’s logging heritage. With sidebar detailing the process from locating the logs through processing and sales.
