Abstract

“Focus Sustainability” piece on Introspective Systems LLC, a startup company based on Peaks Island that has developed a suite of software known as SIMplexity that is intended to help architects and clients identify sustainability problems early on in the design stage. The company’s founders, Kay Aikin and Caryl Johnson, bring diverse experiences and skills to their new roles. Johnson, a geophysicist, has developed software for the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Geological Survey, among other projects, including the development of earthquake monitoring software. Aikin graduated from Pennsylvania State University with one of the first sustainability engineering degrees in the country and has since run her own construction company. They recently hired a CEO, Paul Bierman-Lytle, an architect and planner who has won awards for his work in green design. Beta testing of SIMplexity will begin soon. The company hopes to have the software ready for the market later in the year.
