Abstract

The Maine craft distillery industry is growing, and now these distillers must find a way to differentiate their products from those of the mass distillers. Niche marketing has been a successful strategy for some, including Freeport's Maine Distilleries LLC, whose kosher potato-based spirits sell well among the Hassidic Jewish community in New York City. The locavore movement has also helped sales, and there is hope that a new law that calls for a renegotiated liquor contract between the state and a principal wholesale distributor will help as well. With one map showing the location of Maine's craft distilleries and another that shows craft distillery sales volume growth in the U.S., 2011-12.
