Abstract

Piece examines the costs and benefits of overseas trade missions. State programs, like the ones organized by the Maine International Trade Center, can vary widely in terms of outcome, especially when measured by sales volume, but proponents of trade missions argue that benefits cannot necessarily be quantified. MITC emphasizes business-to-business contacts rather than government-to-government meetings, a model followed by many larger states. With some details about recent trips to Mexico, Colombia, and an upcoming trip to Iceland.
