Abstract

Lisbon-based Springworks Farm is set to sell organic aquaponic lettuce in the fall 2015. The advantages to aquaponics over traditional agriculture are explained as well as how aquaponics differs from hydroponics. Traditional farms require about six acres for every one acre of aquaponic production, and requires less labor, potentially off-setting the cost of a greenhouse so that the price point of the product is lower. Aquaponics uses about 90% less land and water than soil agriculture but could generate three to four times more food. [images]
