Abstract

A look at how businesses in Bar Harbor -- many of which rely heavily on the summer influx of tourists -- are struggling to stay afloat as the pandemic, supply shortages, and shipping bottlenecks affect people's travel plans and stores' stock. Many business owners refer to the situation as catastrophic. Citizen initiatives, residents associations, and coalitions of local leaders are trying to come up with ways to sustain their communities. One initiative, proposed by the Downeast COVID-19 Task Force, suggests offering COVID-19 testing to ensure safety and allow reopening of many tourist-related businesses.
