Abstract

Lengthy article celebrating the life and running career of Mainer Joan Benoit Samuelson. The illustrious career of the Cape Elizabeth native includes two Boston Marathon wins and a gold medal in the women's marathon at the 1984 Olympics. In 1998 Samuelson founded the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10-K in her hometown, attracting elite runners from around the world. In 2005, at the age of 48, she qualified for the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials. Now 50 years old, Samuelson is training for her last competitive marathon, the Olympic Trials in April.
