Abstract

"Maritime Watch" piece reporting that the 16-member, active-duty crew of the Portland-based Coast Guard cutter Wrangell is currently in Virginia awaiting orders to go overseas. The departure of the Wrangell leaves only one cutter to patrol the waters from Rockland to Portsmouth, N.H., but Coast Guard officials insist this is sufficient to do the job. Since September 11, 2001, the role of the Coast Guard has been changing and the core mission of the agency is being reexamined.
