Abstract

"this just in" piece on the continuing debate over LD 389, which seeks to repeal the law that allows Mainers to petition for referendums that would place a moratorium on building projects even after the planning board has approved them. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ed Suslovic, D-Portland, has been tabled in the state Senate and sent to the Attorney General's office to assess its constitutionality. Suslovic said the bill is an important piece in encouraging affordable housing. Critics feel the measure is an unnecessary repeal of citizens' right to petition grievances. Details.
