Abstract

Article on the bond package the Portland City Council will present to voters this November, which will include money to build a new East End school, and to approve borrowing for renovations to Riverton Community School. Mayor James Cloutier and Councilor Nick Mavodones have also proposed asking voters to approve millions more to renovate Longfellow School. School Committee members are upset over the request, arguing that it contradicts the most recent elementary school plan calling for renovations at Longfellow in 2008. With a focus on comments by Herb Adams, board member, Cheryl Leeman, city councilor, and Otis Thomspon, school committee chair. With a related article on the sale or long-term lease of the school department's administrative office building on Veranda Street in Portland.
