Abstract

Profile of Charice Oliver, a mother of seven from North Freeport, who was appointed local pastor of the Evergreen United Methodist Church on Long Island. Oliver, who took a course to become a lay speaker about six years ago, has only a high-school diploma, and plans to complete an alternative pastor training program called the Course of Study. The Methodist Church, recognizing that many people come to the church later in life, created the course to allow them to pursue the ministry even if they can't complete a regular four-year college degree and the three additional years required at a seminary, says Rev, Linwood Arnold of the School Street Methodist Church in Gorham. Nancy Noble, a resident of Long Island for six years, said she's heard nothing but praise for "Pastor Sherry."
