Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece assessing the impact of the Maine Clean Election Act, noting that the 1996 law has fulfilled its goal of more "clean" candidates. Over half of the current members of the House of Representatives were publicly funded, and about 75 percent of state senators won elections using "clean" money. But, legislative candidates in 2004 will cost taxpayers an estimated $5.4 million, and the act has not decreased the influence of special interests.
