Abstract

Article on the increase in crime in the Old Port district of Portland, especially assaults and random attacks. Tucker Kimball, 28, and Ben Slayton, 29, were randomly assaulted on Feb. 29, with Kimball suffering a crushed cheekbone and a cracked eye orbit. The pair are frustrated by what they perceive as a lack of effort on the part of the Portland Police Department to investigate the crime. Lieutenant Vern Malloch, head of the department's criminal investigation unit, says he can't find evidence that there is an increase in the number of random assaults, but concedes that the overall level of violence in the Old Port is "incredible." Many suspect gang activity by the FSU Posse, or biker gangs like the Outlaws and the Iron Horsemen. Details.
