Abstract

"classical" piece with a profile of Richard de Costa, a Scarborough computer programming teacher who is creating an opera in an artificial language using video-game design engines, virtual-reality gear, and volunteers from around the world. The opera is called "K'ai: Death of Dreams," and is written in several languages, all of which de Costa created. De Costa imagines a production of the opera with a large screen on stage, five computers with operators wearing virtual-reality gloves, and singers off to the side. De Costa hopes to do a matinee workshop of a completed scene from the opera at PORTOpera's July 31 double bill.
