Abstract

Article about Harold Arndt of Freeport who is building a 113-foot schooner, "Island Rover" out of other people's junk in the middle pasture in which he and has family once grazed sheep. Arndt says that once completed the schooner will sleep 19 and will have sails backed up by a pair of biodiesel engines. Once completed, the schooner, to be manned by those who helped build her, will set out on a seven-year world tour to demonstrated the wisdom of recycling, and to provide a secure platform for environmental scientists. Before retiring in 1995, Arndt was a waste-minimization officer at Bath Iron Works.
